Technical Seminar 2017

ContiTech Oil & Gas

May 2017 ContiTech Dunlop Oil and Marine’s 44th Technical Seminar.

Opening proceedings was Kam Zandiyeh, General Manager - DOM who said: “This was an exceptional year for everyone involved. With 84 delegates attending our 3 day seminar, this is the largest group of guests we have ever had the pleasure of hosting. We are extremely fortunate that they are prepared to travel from all around the world - 32 different countries in total, some of whom have travelled as far afield as the USA, China, Nigeria, Angola, Canada and Singapore. It is further pleasing and demonstrates our strong position in the market, when record attendance has been recorded when the industry is still going through a challenging period.”

In this year’s Technical Seminar, we also had a record number of Guest Speakers. We were delighted to welcome guest speakers from 3 of the largest OEM companies, in the world – Bluewater, Imodco and SOFEC and the world’s largest offshore operator from Norway – Statoil. In addition, we had a further speaker from Clarksons Research Services, who offered some welcome analysis on current market trends.

A number of colleagues from other units within the EMEA segment also attended. We were joined by Willi Emde – Head of R&D and Production for EMEA and Peter Neale – Head of Services and Digital Solutions and Business Manager for Dredging and Mining. They were readily available and happy to discuss our extended portfolio of products and services with our delegates.

The days were full of exciting topics from both our Technical Engineers and guest speakers, all of which are specifically tailored towards the design, build, development and life expectancy of Offshore Marine hoses, while maintaining reliability and health & safety.

Kam Zandiyeh - General Manager of DOM

On day 1, an in-depth presentation on the ‘Qualification Process of a New Technology on a CALM Project’ was delivered by Caroline Epp - Hydrodynamic & Subsea Engineer and Emmanuel Philpat – Buyer/Package Manager from Imodco, in Monaco. The presentation focused on the qualification process for a new electronic and remote Marine hose leak detection system, the development which has been jointly completed by Imodco and DOM.

Stian Garlid – Senior Engineer (Platform Technology) from Statoil, in Norway, was the first guest speaker on day 2 to commence with - ‘An introduction to, and operational experiences with, OLS Systems’. The presentation focused on sharing recent challenges faced by Statoil and how these have been overcome with Support from DOM and use of API17k hoses.

Vijay Pothuganti - Mooring Engineer for SOFEC, in the USA, followed with an explanation on the ‘Design Input Sensitivity for CALM Buoys’.

The concluding guest speaker presentation of the day was by Bas Lutje Schipholt - Tender Manager from Bluewater, in the Netherlands on the ‘Practical Implementation of hose properties in the design of offloading and CALM systems’.

Karl Williams, from Clarksons Research Services, was our 5th and final guest speaker on the 3rd and final day, wrapping up the seminar nicely with an explanation on current market trends in the Oil & Gas Industry.

Due to continued demand, and record number of guest speakers this year the program was extended to include case studies of good and bad practices and an informal forum on the ‘Review of varying industry practices’. The aim of these sessions was to increase awareness among attendees with the aim of improving safety and reliability in harsh Marine conditions.

Paul Staton, Principal Engineer – DOM said: “We had a number of topics for discussion, but the two main areas of interest surrounded marine breakaway couplings (MBC) and flange jointing. It certainly inspired lots of lively debates and open dialogs.”

The tour of DOMs manufacturing facility in Grimsby and full scale test facilities was, as always, a highlight. The opportunity to see where and how the hoses are built - from the storing of raw materials, preparation, testing and inspection, to the live demonstrations performed in the laboratory to show the testing and quality procedures, appeared to exceed many expectations.

The delegates also had time to talk with the teams in the factory and experience, first hand, how the knowledge and expertise of our employees in the building of our hoses is what makes us ‘Global Leaders in Hose Solutions’.

Kam said: “We have been successfully running the technical seminar now for over 40 years. Every year we challenge ourselves to look for new developments in the market, so that we can offer our delegates something new and exciting to experience.

“This year has reminded me of the value our delegates have in the sharing of knowledge and expertise. The relationships they make and trust they build during the seminar is invaluable! The feedback from surveys’ suggests that the attendees were once again extremely pleased with the program and have provided us with ideas for further improvement. Special thanks must go to everyone at DOM who together make this event better every year and unique within our industry.

“We continue to strive to be the best solution providers and leading innovators in the industry.”
